Olive Festival in Olynthos

Every year, on the last three days of July, the Olive Festival is organized in Olynthos, by the Cultural Association of Olynthos. Through this special event, the olive is presented, the most important certified product produced in the region. Visitors have the opportunity to taste the olive, as well as other products made from it, and have fun with traditional music. On the last day, olives and tsipouro are distributed.

 

Sardine Festival in Nea Moudania

The Sardine Festival is organised every year at the end of June and the beginning of July by the Cultural Association of Nea Moudania. During the festival a series of events are held, including dancing, traditional music, exhibitions of historical photography and paintings. Through the Sardine Festival, visitors can experience not only the excellent taste of sardines, but also the traditional customs and the current artistic activity of the region.

 

Greek Halloween in Polygyros

On the last Sunday of Greek Halloween, a big party is organized in Polygyros! At noon, a parade of carnivalists and floats takes place and there are folk feasts, exhibitions, music and dances, which give a colourful character to the town. Citizens and visitors enjoy a festive atmosphere. The events conclude on Clean Monday, with the traditional kite flying on the beach of Kalyves.

 

Fifteenth of August in Megali Panagia

The village of "Megali Panagia" in North Halkidiki, was named after the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary found just outside the village in 1927. At the place where the icon was found, the Holy Church of the Pilgrimage of Panagia has been erected and every year on August 15th it celebrates with a big festival. On the eve of the feast, a solemn vespers is held, while on the day after the service, a traditional festival is organized.

 

Trade fair in Agios Mamas

It takes place every year at the beginning of September and is surrounded by a series of cultural events. The fair takes place in the settlement of Agios Mamas, on the occasion of the celebration of the church of the same name. Exhibitors come from all over Greece, while at the same time events are organized, such as concerts, dance evenings and revivals of traditional customs. Every year the fair attracts thousands of visitors to Agios Mamas.

 

Feast of Prophet Elias in Vavdos

The feast of Prophet Elias is celebrated every year in a special way in the village of Vavdos, in central Halkidiki. On 20 July all the villagers gather at the church of Prophet Elias, on Vigla peak, located at an altitude of 1050 m. For the celebration, cultural events are organized with traditional Macedonian dances and common meals for all, called "Kazania tis Agios Lia".

 

Tou Mavrou Niu t' Aloni

The most important Easter custom of Halkidiki is revived every year on Easter Tuesday in the village of Ierissos. The "Tou Mavrou Niu t' Aloni" ceremony has its roots in the years of the Revolution of 1821 and aims to honor the victims of the Turks, the 400 inhabitants of Ierissos, who were massacred in Halkidiki. The ceremony begins immediately after the memorial service in the Church of Ierissos. All the residents start dancing and singing the traditional Easter songs and end with the “Kangeleftos” dance, passing under a laurel arch. During the ceremony, buns, Easter eggs and Greek coffee are distributed to everyone.
